The relics, through the test game, have only had specific point values for certain characters. The fun here is that owning a relic specific to your character type gives you a lot of help towards your points each turn.
However, a relic, such as The Book of the Dead Gods, is wanted by the Philosopher, the Terminator and there may be as many as 6 of these characters in a single universe. Defnite trade bait for the other characters who get no particular value for this specific relic
There is a large move afoot to give the relics certain local power, depending upon whether they are on a fleet or world. Maybe add an Imperial Credit at its location, that kind of thing. There is good and bad about that. The good part is, it is another one of those cool little complexities that give a game like this texture. The bad is, it does something for everyone and makes them less likely to get traded, which affects the game balance.
It is interesting to see that every little tweak of the game has a long term effect in this kind of game. Something that appears to be a small change often has a cumulative effect over the course of the game, turning into a massive issue by the end of the game. Many of the games aspects are planned to be that way. While IWars is intended to be a dynamic and responsive game to its players, changes must be tested and all of the consequences of even small tweaks observed.
It is likely that even after IWars is being played commercially, that we will still be running limited tests on issues such as whether relics should also have powers, even small local ones.
