Any chance for a "Bas-Lag" world?

Bas Lag

Postby Iucounu » June 28th, 2002, 7:30 pm

I would love it. I've been talking our fearless leader into reading the Mieville books (he needs time not urging). We'll fight over a Bas Lag homeworld. Or I'd be willing to accept Perdido Street Station

I'm sure Duke Leto can tell what kind of character would have this homeworld, or if it's not a homeworld what kind of world it is.

While we cannot use exact names from other media, though I wish we could, there are ways that we can flavor the world I am certain. After all, why shouldn't you be able to play in the worlds of your imagination? I'm pleased that you want to....

Don't name your own planets

Postby Python Rhishisikk » January 12th, 2003, 11:23 pm

Guys, just how many planets named Arakis and Tatooine can one universe hold? Ignore the copyright violation and consider the interaction when someone wants resources delivered to one of these worlds and the Trader asks 'which one'?

Not to mention such creative names as have to be deleted, and lead the author to be censored. :)

Please, please, please fight over Bas-Lag. I can get points trading to it each time it changes hands. :) And warlords would LOVE to fight each other anyway, makes a good excuse. Besides, if people are fighting over Bas-Lag, they aren't trying to invade my core worlds.

No question, you are right. I love all of the worlds that people my science fiction favorite stories. It was my hope that these worlds in IWars would serve as a backdrop for all new stories, built by the players as they played them. But it was clear that the names would have to be changed to protect the innocent. One world, though a generic world name, was changed graphically to represent a certain individual closely related to the game.

It is my greatest conceit that all of the worlds of all the books, movies, and television can somehow live in this universe, even some of them fantasy worlds. And I have always hoped that the real people with their charater-driven players in Imperial Wars would be motivated to some degree by the worlds within which they play.

The IWars database currently contains something like 700+ names in it. They are to some degree constrained by the kind of world that they can be named for. Homeworlds have certain names that can be drawn upon for a particular character type, for instance. Same with Imperial Worlds. Each IWars universe will be formed randomly grabbing these world names along with a lot of other mechanics. While they are just names, I hope they add to the scenery that helps make the game more playable.

Eh? But there's an Arisia? This is a planet from E.E. 'Doc' Smith's Lensman series? Or is it just that we can't use things Arrakis, Tatooine et al because they've been TM'd? Hence, I'm presuming, Eisly Moss?

I'd have to check ...

Postby Galactic Effectuator » July 7th, 2005, 1:14 pm

I'd have to check back to my database but it's possible that the allusion to another world might have accidentally spawned an actual world from the Lensman series.

I am often adding world names to the database so if you have particular suggested world names, please feel free to send them on to me. You can send them with suggested alternate spellings or in their original form, along with the book and author. I'll add them to the database, which contains near 600 worlds now, and one day you may find yourself travelling to a favorite world you visited in another environment.

I should make something completely clear. None of use, players, developers or live team intend to take advantage of someone's copyright. There is no theft in hallowing ground that becomes our own in a fictional adventure. In fact, it is more likely to send us back to that adventure I think. I have often wanted to add a click through to Amazon Books for worlds that referenced an author's book. However, I was warned off from this by an attorney early on so we just do what we can.

:)

I somehow missed this first post from Ghosthead so I will definitely add Bas-Lag now.
